Jiahua Wen (hereinafter "we" or "the developer") values your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how ChineseSnap / ChineseSnap (hereinafter "the App") collects, uses, stores, and protects your information. Please read this policy carefully before using the App.

1. Information We Collect

1.1 Photos and Videos

The App needs access to your camera or photo library to perform optical character recognition (OCR) and translation on Chinese text you select. Photos or videos you capture or upload are essential for the App's core functionality.

Important: To complete OCR and translation, your photos are uploaded to our backend server and then forwarded to third-party AI/OCR service providers (see "Third-Party Services" below). Photos are not used to identify you personally and are not used for advertising or tracking purposes.

1.2 Device Identifier

We generate a random device identifier locally on your device and store it locally. This identifier is used only for app functionality purposes, such as sending feature feedback and syncing offline operations. It is not an advertising identifier (IDFA) and is not linked with third-party data for tracking.

1.3 Account Information

When you create an account, we may collect your email address or phone number (depending on your chosen registration method) for account verification and login. Your learning data (such as saved words, learning progress, community posts, comments, and messages) is stored on our servers to enable synchronization across devices.

1.4 Feedback Information

When you use in-app feedback features (such as reporting low-quality results or refreshing translations), we record the relevant event type and device identifier to diagnose issues and improve recognition quality. This information does not include your photo content.

2. How We Use Information

• Recognize Chinese text in images and provide translation, pinyin, and segmentation results
• Generate and manage your personal flashcards and learning progress
• Support community features (posts, comments, challenges, messages)
• Diagnose and fix app issues, and improve recognition accuracy
• Prevent abuse and ensure service security

3. Third-Party Service Providers

To provide core services, we share necessary data with the following third-party service providers. These providers only receive data necessary to complete their services and do not use your data for advertising or tracking purposes.

• Moonshot / Kimi Vision: used for cloud OCR text recognition and translation
• Baidu OCR: used as a fallback OCR service when Kimi Vision is unavailable
• Supabase: used for user account management, database storage, and authentication
• Vercel: used for hosting the App's backend services

4. Information Storage and Security

• Photos you upload for OCR are deleted from our servers after processing is complete and are not stored long-term
• Your account data and learning data are stored encrypted in our database
• We use industry-standard security measures to protect data transmission and storage
• The App does not contain third-party advertising SDKs or third-party analytics tools

5. Children's Privacy

The App is intended for users of all ages, including children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe we have inadvertently collected personal information from a child, please contact us and we will delete it promptly.

6. Your Rights

You can manage your data at any time in the following ways:

• Manage the App's access to your camera and photos through iOS system settings
• Delete your learning data, posts, or account within the App
• Contact us to request export or deletion of your account data

7. Updates to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The updated policy will be posted on this page with a new "Last updated" date. For material changes, we will also notify you through in-app notifications or other means.
